Chapter Eleven

Descending the stairs the next morning Audra knew she’d been silly to waste a moment’s thought on Mitch’s reaction. He was glued to the phone again, last night’s kisses already forgotten.

She waved a greeting and hurried to the kitchen. Staring in the refrigerator, nothing appealed. She didn’t want pancakes again and she’d had eggs for supper. Deciding to indulge herself, she called the lodge and requested a pickup. She’d splurge and have a fancy breakfast at the restaurant and see about completing her circuit of the lake by walking home.

When she went to get her purse, she hesitated, knowing the courteous thing to do would be to let Mitch know where she was going, but not wishing to interrupt she rationalized away the urge. They weren’t each other’s keepers. Chances were he’d never know she was gone.

She stepped out onto the porch just as she heard the jeep. In no time she sat at one of the large windows in the lodge’s restaurant overlooking the lake. She pushed away the thought of how nice it would have been to share breakfast.

After eating, Audra headed for the lake. Her thoughts were in turmoil. Maybe the walk would help her focus—see things clearly. Such as what Mitch wanted and what they were going to do, and what had been missing from her marriage.

Was it a strong binding love on both sides? She loved Mitch. Had thought he hung the moon. Until he found it necessary to spend more time at work than at home.

She wondered what it would be like if he took time now and then to focus that intensity on her as he had yesterday during their hike. Not once until after their nap had she felt he was thinking of work. Maybe a few more outings would show him he could manage a bit more recreation and the world as he knew it wouldn’t end.

But she was not on a crusade to save Mitch Wells. She had her own life to take care of and plans to make for after her baby was born.

The day was beautiful and the walk easy. This side of the lake was primarily sandy beaches with few trees growing near the water’s edge. She waved at fishermen in boats, laughed at the children playing in the two-seater paddle wheels and watched with amazement those who were actually swimming in the cold lake water.

“We’ll have to come back here when you’re older,” she said, rubbing her tummy as the baby stretched and rolled. “You can play in the lake and we can go on the paddle boats together. And explore the caves and have a great vacation.”

Smiling dreamily she continued on. It would be nice to have a complete family, mother, father and child. Children. But the only image that rose was that of Mitch Wells as the father. And Audra firmly squelched that.

Mitch was pacing on the porch when the cabin came into view, that cell phone against his ear. How long did the battery last, she wondered.
